Alzar la tara quiere decir tomar las especias por un peso menor del que realmente tienen, rebaja que se acuerda porque cuando cogen los frutos estando frescos, disminuyen de peso y de calidad cuando se secan. Siendo el clavo enviado por el rey el primero que embarcábamos y constituyendo éste el objeto de nuestro viaje, en señal de alegría disparamos varios tiros de bombardas.

[158] Monday, the king sent us 791 cathils of cloves, without reckoning the tare (the tare is to take the spices for less than they weigh, for they become drier daily). As those were the first cloves that we had laden in our ships, we fired many pieces.
