June 17, 1898

Reveille at 5 a.m. Drill and school. Breakfast — hot cakes and coffee. Lunch – rice, biscuits and coffee. 12 noon ‘Charleston’ clearing decks for action. The fleet came to and the officers went on board ‘Charleston’ for a council of war from 2.15 to 4.30 p.m. We carried out target practice. Dinner — canned beef, onions and potatoes, biscuits and coffee. Slept on deck but had to go below at 1 a.m. due to rain.
