Independence Day. Reveille at 6 a.m. The brigade was reviewed by General Anderson at 9.30 am. Dewey came over to Cavite. He was a fine looking man with grey hair and moustache, aged about 61, 5’ 9” and stout. A native band played several pieces in front of our quarters. They were the best band I ever heard! 11 Spanish ships were sunk in battle. The Insurgents looted everything and tons of ammunition was thrown into the bay. During the night the Insurgents tried to take away the Spanish prisoners claiming they could not feed the prisoners and intended to shoot them. They were prevented by the 18th. Regular Infantry. Some shots were fired.
