August 5, 1898

Mass at 6 a.m. Captain Richter was buried with full military honours at 10 a.m., accompanied by a band. There was heavy fire with big guns from 8 to 8.30 p.m. which caused the deaths of two men and the wounding of six others from the 14th US Infantry who were in the trenches. Most of us slept in our clothes expecting to be called out at any moment.
