Rained all last night & today, a perfect flood. Niggers are all starving and stand around while we eat, looking hungry, as if to say, “Why, if you eat all that, where will I come in?”… then fight for scraps. River is very high & the high tides have baked up the China Sea until the river is running salty H²O into De. L. de Bahia [Laguna de Bay]. Mail from home & Eldred today.
