August 9th Wednesday 1899

Took detail out. Very quiet all day. Moved out to night position after dark. About 8 the ins. opened a brisk fire on our left & soon the 4th Ca trotted out to reinforce the line. They soon located them and the art. tore loose at them with shrapnel. In 30 min. all was still. At 10.30 a party of perhaps 150 made an attack on the 21st lines on the north. We were not in it, but were in a cross fire. Could hear commands of both commanders. Their bugle blew recalling about 30 min. Later we hard great yelling –celebrating a Victoria. I suppose the poor ignorant fools don’t know they were whipped long months ago.
