November 26th Sunday 1899

The past week has been spent here in San Fernando doing guard duty and drilling one hour on “off” days. I stood guard Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday nights. Friday we (40 of us) hiked out through San Tomas [Santo Tomas] looking for a bunch of niggers reported to be gathering out that way but succeeded only in making a sneak on B of the 16th Inf doing target practice. They were volley firing for some cause; we crossed the river on a bamboo pole and sent the advance guard out to see what the row was: when we found out we went on again without makeing our presence known. This week has been without rain & the roads are getting pretty good again. We got mail yesterday but the mail received at Frisco from Oct 5th to 18th is lost someplace
