Diary of Juan Labrador, O.P.

May 31, 1942

We continue in peaceful co-existence with our guests. They are so silent that we hardly notice their presence. At times, the commanding and bitter voice of an officer would ring out.

It’s unbelievable that they are young and are soldiers. We were thinking that had they been Spanish, Filipinos or Americans, they would be disturbing us by their vociferous merry-making.

They have their morning and evening exercises which are like rhythmic prayers. If not for their attire they could be mistaken for religious novices.
