January 13, 1943

The weather has been very stormy since January 1 – strong winds and a cold rain. Sometimes I wonder whether this house can stand the wind, as these nipa huts are made of such light materials. The posts and framework of the walls are made of bamboo and the roof and walls are of nipa palm. The floors are also made of bamboo and the wind passes through the floor. The nights are so cool that we must use flannel blankets.

Yesterday we heard that seven Japanese ships arrived in Iloilo.

Jr. (age 12) is raising ducks and chickens, and yesterday the pig belonging to the owner of the house ate one of them. Jr. felt very badly, as that makes two already that have been eaten.
