January 20, 1943

For the last five days there has been bombing taking place somewhere – we are fortunate that it was not near us. The Japanese forces are becoming stronger, and they are occupying most of the towns.

The children now have a teacher, and she comes every day. She is an evacuee living near us. They have lost one year of schooling, and they soon forget if they are not taught every day.

The weather is still very cool, but not stormy.
