October 10, 1944

Today has been quiet, although the alert signal has not been lifted.

This morning I met a priest from Capiz and he confirmed the news of several Americans leaving the Island by submarine for Australia.

I am sorry to tell you of the deaths of Dr. and Mrs. Meyers, Dr. and Mrs. Rose, Mr. and Mrs. Rounds, Mr. and Mrs. Covell, and several other American missionaries who were hiding in the hills. The Japanese raided the area where they were in hiding and were all caught. The Japanese had proof that they were helping the guerrillas and that Dr. Meyers was the Army surgeon. They were all beheaded! These missionaries gave their lives for the Filipinos and a monument should be erected for these martyrs.
