December 5, 1944

Last night we heard cannon fire somewhere out in the distance.

This morning we heard two shots (the Japanese signal for fire). Then we heard more shots, presumably coming from the USAFFE soldiers. Soon there was a big blaze in the same vicinity as the other fires. We could see the soldiers, the few that are left in the garrison, take their place in the trenches. The shooting did not last very long. Two hours later we heard more shooting, then all was quiet for the rest of the day.
