About Salvador H. Laurel

About the author: Salvador Hidalgo Laurel (November 18, 1928 – January 27, 2004), popularly known as “Doy.” For more information, visit the official website of the late Vice President Laurel.

About the diary: The diary entries of Salvador H. Laurel reproduced here were published in Doy Laurel by Celia Diaz-Laurel, privately published, 2005. Used by permission of Mrs. Celia Diaz-Laurel.

The entries represent two distinct periods in the author’s life. The first, covering the evacuation of President Jose P. Laurel from Manila to Baguio and then to Japan, when the author was tasked by his father with keeping a diary of their journey.

The second, represents diary entries covering the Snap Election in 1986, and notes on the Edsa Revolution. As Celia Diaz-Laurel notes in the book,

Two days after Doy’s funeral –as I was about to begin this book– I found his diary where he vividly describes, in his own handwriting, the UNIDO Convention and the historical events that followed.
