And got home and went to sleep. Slept nearly all day. Lieut. Hobson is in the bay. We sent a detail of sharpshooters to the boat for duty with the Mountain Batteries. This boat is an old Spanish boat, protected. It is filled up and will go up the Rio Pasig and attack Santa Anna, Mandaluan [Mandaluyong] & other cities and capture the gun boat de Filipinos [Filipinas]. This is some feast or Saint day. I guess because no one is at work in Tabacolara [Tabacalera], and everybody is dressing up. One homesick boy shot himself in the head just as we came in from the front. Sent papers and notes home and to Tops. Wrote to Miss Carrie Crawford at Berkeley.
