Up for sunrise — pretty but not special. All the vintas shoving off early. — Most people here agree that Quezon & Co. are dismayed at the idea of having independence & will try to back-water right away. (Garrison at Zambo — 1 Co. Moro Scouts, 1 Co. Filipino Scouts, 12 off. No connection with civil govt. at all.) Mrs. Christian says P.D. Grier knew about his braw laddy, Jimmy, and it about killed him, without the cancer. — Went in at 9:00 & got a couple of bags, & some cards. Walked around. Called at post. Back aboard at 11:15. Shoved off at 1:00 for ILOILO. — At 1:30 did the forward third of the ship with Gygax’s inspection. Sick Bay, turrets, shell decks, magazines, qrs., store-room, paints, clothes, cordage, etc., forward mast all the way up, & right to the bow, anchor chain locker. (Inside passage in mast from keel to Spoh 1.) Nice weather in the top — 1:30 to 3:45. Had anap. Rotten balderdash movie — the escaped convict, really a noble character, who shields his pal’s daughter, & and the heavy villain with the big nose, shot by the gal’s dad, who comes back in the nick of time. Utter crap.
