February 11, 1942

Bedie’s 11th birthday. I whispered a song to him with kisses. He received a bag with 12 pan de sal with “Happy birthday from Ismael and Nida.” He cried, “Oh Mummie, they are both alive!”

A ration of radish at noon—Jerry’s idea since we have no meal given us then and then something has to be done with the heap of radishes given us. Bedie had a fabulous party with five other boys in the backyard trench with contribution of food from two mothers. Enid and Nakamura are on the rampage over flies and dysentery.

The Inside Kitchen Group will never live down the pies, coffee, pancakes and extras, more particularly the attitude and atmosphere that developed, glowering everyone away from the kitchen, even others who worked in there.
