Alert and raid signals but no planes. All clear again in p.m. The Tribune is reported to say there is big action against Leyte. No planes around here to speak of. 225,000 in convoy. Expect a real landing on Luzon within a few days. Got % kilo each of sugar issued by Japanese—probably the last. The last of our camp reserve of corned beef was issued today. Australians said to be taking part with [Admiral] Halsey in landings. Report that US has given Japan until Monday (23rd) to make Manila an Open City and get out, otherwise [there will be] heavy action against Japanese cities. Southern area of Japan already razed, report.
