About Ernest W. Hewson

About the author: Ernest Williams Hewson (May 27, 1879 — May 30, 1970) also known as Hewston. Artist (studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute). The questionnaire filled out by the author states,”I have a complete diary, typed in 1908 from personal diary, of every day during my 16 months service in the California volunteers,” and that he served as a Private and Bugler in Company B, First Regiment, California Volunteers from San Francisco from May 6, 1898 to September 21, 1899.

About the diary: A typescript, Diary Regarding Spanish American and Philippine Wars, in the Ernest W. Hewston Papers, U.S. Army Heritage and Ediucation Center at Carlisle Barracks. What has been included is the portion from June 28, 1898, first sighting of the Philippines, to February 6, 1899 when the typescript ends.
