10th of May 1901

Mayor Orwig ordered the guard at the prisons’ door to position himself about three meters away from the building at dusk, to allow the prisoners to stay in front and breathe the fresh air unhampered from the sea.

The said mayor has taken us for a walk two or three times around the vicinity. He has also allowed some to roam the street, at a certain distance from the prison. However, the prisoners stopped the practice when they saw that some of the guards were arrested for allowing them to buy some coconuts and chickens from the vendors.

We can hardly buy anything, except for a few pieces of clothing material which we entrust to the interpreter to do for us, at a price that is suitable for him. We are also able to order some canes and a few kitchen utensils.
