November 11, 1901.

The other evening, one of the traveling deputies of the Provincial Treasury at loilo came along just after dark and asked McC—— and me to keep him over night. We gave him supper and breakfast and I gave up my own, and only, bed to him. He accepted all this without a word one way or the other excepting a vague remark upon leaving the next morning to the effect that we had done the best we could and that, of course, he understood that we were not prepared for taking proper care of strangers. Took his departure without even saying so much as “Thank you,” although he had several times mentioned that he was lineal descendant of Richard Baxter!
