September 27, 1944

This morning I awakened early to attend the 6:15 mass in honor of St. Vincent de Paul, the founder of this order (Sisters of Charity). We had no raids yesterday or today.

We heard that on September 24, when the Americans bombed Iloilo, one American had a forced landing near Oton. The pilot and his companion were both saved. A crowd of men, mostly all guerrillas met the plane which was then on fire. They placed the two Americans on their shoulders and carried them to safety. One man told me that the Filipinos “love the Americans more than their own people.”
