Baguio, May 6, 1942

I was surprised when I heard this afternoon that Corregidor had fallen. The news came from Radio San Francisco. All our hopes for an early recapture are waning. According to the War Department in Washington, General Wainwright is negotiating the surrender with the Japanese High Command. Radio London announced this morning that the Japanese forces have successfully landed in Corregidor.

So the finis to the history of this small fortress has been written. This great fortress and great nightmare for the Japanese, has finally succumbed to the Japanese attacks. No fortress can stand forever when the defenders have lost hope.

Japanese ships can now enter the Bay and dock at the piers.
