9 February 1520

Thursday 9 of said month, I measured the Sun at 63o 1⁄4, with a declination of 11o 1⁄2, the pole’s elevation being 38o 30’, and the coast provides for dropping anchor and is not high with mountains and we went along the coast. This coast runs East West and a quarter league to the Northwest – Southeast, and the tip is called Punta de las Arenas [today Punta Mogotes, and not Punta Arenas, in southern Chile].
