Al día siguiente, nueve de julio, envió el rey a las naves una piragua bastante hermosa, que tenía la popa y la proa adornadas con oro, y en ésta un pabellón blanco y azul con un copo de plumas de pavo en el asta. Se veían en esta piragua, entre varias otras personas, músicos que tocaban zamponas y tambores. La piragua, que es una especie de fusta o galera, venía seguida de dos almadies, que son embarcaciones de pescadores. Ocho de los principales ancianos de la isla venían en la piragua: subieron a bordo y se sentaron sobre un tapiz que se les tenía preparado sobre el castillo de popa, donde nos ofrecieron un vaso de madera lleno de betel y de arec, raíces que mascan continuamente, con flores de naranjo y de jazmines, todo cubierto con una tela de seda amarilla. Nos regalaron también dos jaulas llenas de gallinas, dos cabras, tres vasos de vino de arroz destilado y cañas de azúcar. Un presente semejante hicieron a los de la otra nave, y después de habernos abrazado, se despidieron de nosotros.
El vino de arroz es tan claro como el agua, pero tan fuerte que muchos de nuestra tripulación se embriagaron. Lo llaman arach.
[114] On the following day, 9 July, the king of that island sent to us a very beautiful prau, whose bow and stern were worked in gold. At the bow flew a white and blue banner surmounted with peacock feathers. Some men were playing on pipes and drums. Two almadies came with that prau (praus resemble fustas, while the almadies are their small fishing boats). Eight old men, who were chiefs, entered the ships and took seats in the stern upon a carpet; they presented us with a painted wooden jar full of betel and areca (the fruit they chew continually), and jasmine and orange blossoms, a covering of yellow silk cloth, two cages full of fowls, a couple of goats, three jars full of distilled rice wine, and some bundles of sugar cane; they did the same to the other ship and, embracing us, took their leave. The rice wine is as clear as water, but so strong that many of our men got drunk drinking it, and they call it arach.

Ginawa din nilá ito sa kabilâng barko at umalis pagkatapos kaming yakapin. Sinlinaw ng tubig ang alak ng kanin, subalit napakatapang na nilasing nitó ang marami sa mga tauhan namin. Tinatawag itong arach.
