Reveille at 4.40 am. An English warship entered the harbour at 1 p.m. At 7.30 p.m. we received news that a great battle had been fought at Santiago de Cuba and that four to six thousand Spanish had been killed and wounded. The US forces under General Shafter had losses of between six hundred and a thousand killed and wounded. While they succeeded in gaining a foothold they did not succeed in capturing Santiago de Cuba.
