We arrived in Guam at about 7:30 a.m. We were asked to go to the airlines rest room for a little refreshment. Mr. Sison an engineer employed by the U.S. Navy in Guam, met us and drove us around to show us the place. We returned to the plane after a brief tour and took off at 8:27 a.m.
En route to Wake by Pan American Airlines. At 10.30 a.m. about 2 hours after we had left Guam Mrs. Mary R. Greider a 78 year old American lady who was seated just across the aisle from my seat, got up to go to the toilet accompanied by her nurse. When she returned, I noticed that she was very pale. I suspected that something was wrong. Suddenly she gave out a shriek and fixed her eyes and began to breath heavily. Oxygen inhalation was immediately given. Her pulse was imperceptible. I opened my bag and gave her an injection of Coramine. The pulse improved for a brief period, soon to disappear again. I gave her a second injection of Coramine, intravenously but useless. The Captain of the plane asked me if I recommended that he return to Guam. I told him that it was useless, as she was in terrible condition. She died a few minutes later.
Cause of death: Cardiac Embolism. We covered her with a blanket and kept her in the seat.
