Gen S sends for me at three pm to tell me of his morning conference with Pres. Q. Pres. told him of Valdes that MacA has always wanted V. even at the beginning of 1936. Gen S. told gim that there is not a gen. off. fit for the C of S and that there are only 2 men with the makings, Pastor and myself. Pres Q told him that he has been advised of the good qualities of these two men. Pres Q. asked of Gen. L. and Gen S told him that he ought to know more of Gen L. than himself. Gen. S also said that Americans have spoken very highly of the mil. qualities of Gen. V. may be from the many medals.
