No message from Manila. Afraid at night, servants are always threatening to go and sending clothes away already. When Elsa Huni offered to move in with me I was delighted. Elsa is daughter (19 years old) of a Swiss father and Filipino mother. Mother dead and father now married to red-headed Swiss woman, making Elsa’s dark eyes, skin, and hair a striking contrast to her stepmother’s. Elsa will be a great help with children (servants getting more and more neglectful of all duties), and so nice to have someone to talk with at mealtime and to sit with in dark after blackout.
