Colonel Smith’s servant ‘Sam’ died suddenly. I had my photograph taken in town. There were 21 series of court-martials which resulted in the following sentences: Phillipson, fight with Muller: Fined $5. Mullally, fight with Phillipson: Fined $5. Verheyen, drunk and disorderly: Fined $10. Dillon, drunk and disorderly: Fined $5. McCusker, absent without leave: Fined $5. Wallace, drunk: Fined $5. Sergeant Erenfort, firing in trenches without orders: Fined $30, and reduced to ranks with 60 days confinement from date of sentence. We thought this sentence very unjust as Sergeant Erenfort had already been confined since August 8.
