I went on guard to relieve Sergeant Kaye, although I felt very sick with pain in my back, the result, I believe, of 11 days in the trenches without being able to change or remove our clothes. There was continuous skirmishing and some officers and 1 padre were killed. I signed the payroll while in the trenches.
