September 13, 1944

Yesterday we had our first air raid warning. The children were on their way from school when the whistles began to blow and the church bells began to ring. Japanese soldiers told them to run home quickly. Thank goodness the planes did not pass over us. To add to the excitement, around 5:00 p.m. we heard machine gunning from the direction of the Manduriao airport (about 1 1⁄2 km from us). We heard later that the Japanese were practicing.
