December 1, 1944

The nights are beautiful with a full moon, but what a pity there is so much bloodshed in this world! We spent a quiet night last night – no shooting or fires.

This morning at 11:30 a.m. we heard bombing nearby, but could not see any planes. In a few minutes we saw five large planes coming toward us. As they flew low over our house, we could see that they were “flying fortresses”. They turned and headed towards the sea, and later we heard bombing.

Many of the soldiers in the garrison across from us have been sent to other places. They were so grateful for our hospitality that they gave us some rice before they left.
