Spent the entire day drawing the map we got the data for yesterday. It seems we were within a mile of San Jose, where there are 500 rebels. We were eight miles beyond our outposts. Had a very interesting talk with Lieut. F., W[est]. P[oint]. ’97, who gave me much information about the enemy’s position and our plans, not available to every private. I cannot imagine any work more to my taste than this reconnaissance.
