Edith Shacklette, know as Shack to her intimate friends, phoned me this afternoon and said, “You have a package here; I think it is something edible, I’ll send it down to-you tomorrow by Captain Burge? I’m so excited about it I can hardly wait–I do hope it is something sweet. I wrote Florence Sanders of Cebu that I could do with a bit of candy. Bill wrote Phil and asked that he send some radiograms for us. We sent each of our families one, also, one to the Texas Company, New York. The Lapham family also sent messages. I’m glad the Laphams fare well, for we feel responsible for their being here on Bataan. Shack is a dandy girl, I like her very much and wish that I had an opportunity to know her better. She is chief nurse at Hospital No 1. She asked me to come
up on my day off in case I get one, and see their setup.
