Le lendemain 5 décembre, nous avons été obligés de louvoyer pour gagner l’entréede la baie de Manille. Nous avons mouillé le soir en dehors de lile Marivelles, à deux lieues de distance, sur 30 brasses bon sond de sable noir: Enfin, après avoir esluyé pendant trois jours des. calmes & des vents contraires, nous fommes entrés dans la baie par la pañle du fud de Marivelles, & nous avons mouillé le 8 dans le part de Cavitte pas trois brasles & demie sond de vase: nous y avons trouvé la frégate du Roi d’Espagne la Vénus, commandée par M. Langara, qui saisoit ses dispoñitions pour son retour en Espagne par le cap. de Bonne-Espérance. Nous y avons trouvé les galions le Saint-Joseph :& le Saint-Charles, avec pluseurs embarcations , & des espèces de galères.
The next morning, the 5th of December, we had to tack about to gain the entrance to Manilla Bay. We had anchored the night before on a good thirty fathom black sand bottom outside the Island of Marivelles, about two leagues off. After experiencing three calm days and three days with contrary winds, we entered the bay by the southern passage of Marivelles Island, and anchored on the 8th in Port Cavitte, in a three-and-a-half fathom mud bottom. There we met the Spanish frigate Venus, commanded by M. Langara, who was preparing to return to Spain via the Cape of Good Hope. We also found the galleons St. Joseph and St. Charles, with several other craft and galleys.
