August 27, 1909

On Friday the 27th of August, at 6:00 in the morning, just as we were getting up, the captain of the ship noticed a life jacket floating in the water, stopped the ship, dropped some sailors into the sea with a boat and went to get the life jacket, the insignia upon it was “Cracisla Liverpool,” at around noon of this same day noticed two islands called the Botanes [Batanes] Islands and a few hours later, the four Babuyan Islands on the southern side. The narrows or the straits between these islands are called the Balintang Channel, through which we embarked into the China Sea. This was the end of the Pacific Ocean and the beginning of the China Sea.
