September 21, 1944

What a day! At about 9:15 a.m. American planes started a raid which lasted all day. Estimate 300 planes came over—beautiful diving. Anti-aircraft firing not too safe but safe enough for our planes. Much diminished in p.m. No Japanese planes up to attack. It was a glorious experience after 33 months of confident waiting. Big fires in the evening. A huge explosion toward the port area. Wolff says he has orders which say, “ Duty 9/24.” I wonder.
