Monday 12-5-98

Moved office to 73 by Palace in a.m. –a good building for this place with large porches and windows of mother of pearl. A small army of native workmen was at work on the grounds & house. Went up to the Palace where the 2nd batt. is quartered. A high iron fence surrounds a park of perhaps 10 ac. in the middle of which stands a two story capacious building with broad veranda & driveway in front. Large reception hall of marble, over which our boys have spread.

Wall & ceiling finely frescoed –a grand stairway of bronze. Floors of mahogany –fine court behind & stone stables. The finest barracks in Manila. Formerly belonged to the Bishop and are the most splendid in the islands. Now belongs to a wealthy widow.
